  • Icky Mettle, the 1993 debut from Archers of Loaf, is a ferocious and unfiltered blast of early '90s indie rock—equal parts sneer, slop, and brilliance. Coming out of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the band landed squarely in the same post-Pavement, pre-grunge sweet spot that defined the era, yet carved their own path with a sound that was both abrasive and weirdly catchy.

From the opening jolt of “Web in Front,” with its now-iconic line “And there’s a chance that things’ll get weird / Yeah, that’s a possibility”, the album sets a tone of twitchy, awkward defiance. Eric Bachmann’s vocals strain and yelp with an almost unhinged energy, while the band plays like they’re constantly on the verge of falling apart—and that tension is part of the charm.

What makes Icky Mettle endure isn’t just nostalgia—it’s that the record still feels alive. There’s something timeless about its imperfections, its sarcastic tone, and its sense of barely-contained chaos. It’s not polished, and that’s the point. It snarls and fidgets, and in doing so, captures a moment of youthful unrest that never really goes out of style.

It's the sound of a band that didn't quite fit in—and didn’t care to.

    Reviews

,,Essential for fans of US indie rock." (stereoplay, May 2012)

Pitchfork, in their 2011 reissue review, called Icky Mettle "one of the most engaging and confident debuts of the indie rock era," noting how "it combined cocky swagger with self-effacing humor" in a way that made the band feel both bratty and vulnerable. AllMusic praised the album for its “raw immediacy and off-kilter hooks,” while Rolling Stone, reflecting back on the album years later, called it “a blueprint for a whole wave of scrappy, emotionally messy guitar bands to come.”
