Description
A spiritual sequel of sorts to Memphis Blues, Detour finds Cyndi Lauper swapping out blues for country & western. The "western" part of the equation is crucial to Detour, a record equally enamored of cowboy camp as it is of Music City craft and corn. Such a wide purview is testament to Lauper's taste-savvy show biz sensibilities. I am totally impressed by this album which I have on CD, LP and MP3. This was definitely a labor of love and Cyndi does country as well as anyone I've ever heard. Most of these songs have always been favorites so people will naturally compare Cyndi's renditions with the originals. What a treat to hear Cyndi do Patti Page's 'Detour' and with the aide of Emmylou Harris you might imagine it is Patti Page double tracking her vocal. Misty Blue is a great country song but also a great torch song which Cyndi takes to the limit. Both Patsy Cline hits included: Walkin' After MIdnight and I Fall To Pieces are done in fine form. Although Guy Mitchell's pop recording of 'Heartaches By The Number' is probably the one best remembered by most, Cyndi has gone back to the sound of the country original by Ray Price, fiddles and all. Every song is done to perfection but my favorite is Marty Robbins' 'Begging To You'. I didn't think anyone knew how to yodel in this day and age but the yodeling on 'I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart' has proven me wrong. This is some of the best yodeling I've ever heard. Last time this song was done by anyone that I remember was Patti Page in 1951 when it was on her first studio album 'Folk Song Favorites' (10 inch LP which later incarnated on 12 inch with the title 'Romance On the Range'). This restored by faith in Cyndi Lauper.
